In Memory of

Mrs. Julie Bymaster

The whole Fairmount Community will miss Mrs. Julie Bymaster. She was one of our best loved teachers for over 30 years. Mrs. Bymaster touched the lives of many students both in her classroom and at Outdoor Lab through the years. Our lives are all a little better from knowing and loving Julie!

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
—Sally Mills

Colorado Schools Testing Program: The Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) will be given in English language arts and math for students in grades 3 through 6, and science for students in grade 5. The testing will all be given in one state testing window—March 20th through April 28th.

Standardized tests inform our school in many ways. Our teachers, for example, review the results from the state tests to adjust their instruction. Families will be provided a fuller understanding of their students’ mastery of grade level expectations from the CMAS. In addition, Fairmount is accredited, in part, based on CMAS results.

Fairmount’s CMAS schedule is provided in this newsletter. This is the same schedule that is posted on our school website.

Spring Break is March 26th–30th. We hope all of you have a safe and enjoyable break with your family! We will see everyone back on Monday, April 2nd.

As always, if you have a question, comment, or suggestion, please call the office, stop by, or email me at smills@jeffco.k12.co.us.

Fairmount’s CMAS Testing Schedule

Please note: students do not test during the whole test window! This time includes setup and closure as well as extended time available to some students. Most students complete the sessions in 60 minutes or less.

PTA HAPPENINGS

We would like to thank Adria Lucerna, Mary Keith Floyd, and Megan Castle for being our guest speakers at the February PTA meeting. The presentation from this meeting can be found on our website. They have formed a committee in hopes of gaining traction on the sidewalk construction. The committee will be at the Fairmount Firebird 5K Chase and have a Community Open House in May. Their goal is to get as much community support as possible. We need the county to understand how important it is to our community that our children can have a safe route to school. The time, energy, and effort that these women are putting into this project is so commendable. Thank you!

Please plan on attending our March 6th PTA meeting at 3:45 p.m. Child watch will be provided free of charge. We hope to see you there!

PTA Board elections will take place during our April meeting (Tuesday, April 3rd at 3:45 p.m.). Click HERE to see a description of the open positions. If you are interested in throwing your name in the hat or just finding out more about any one of the board positions . . . there is still time. Please contact Kaye Becker at kmariebecker@yahoo.com.

The Fairmount community has been fortunate to have so many involved parents helping to make our school what it is today. Unfortunately, many of those wonderful parents will be departing us after this school year. Please contact Laura Warren at enrichment@fairmountpta.org if you are interested in or would like to receive any more information on any of the open positions. Remember that if we do not fill these open positions, the program/event runs the risk of going away. Co-coordinators are always welcome. So grab a friend and volunteer today!

The Fairmount Talent Show was a great success once again this year. Congratulations to all those students who participated and showcased their talents. Thank you to all of you who came out to cheer on the participants and to those who helped out behind the scenes.

The PTA Board wishes your family a safe and fun-filled Spring Break!

A BIG THANK-YOU TO . . .

Mary Sinesi, Nicky Dodge, and all the other volunteers who helped pull together the talent show. You guys did an amazing job organizing the show and showing off our very talented students at Fairmount.

We would like to extend a big thank-you to the classroom representatives and parents who coordinated the Valentine’s Day parties this year. You helped make it a special day for the students!

Deb Schillie for continuing to put her efforts toward the selling, tracking, and overall management of our King Soopers and Safeway Grocery Card program. There is a ton of work that goes on behind the scenes.

Kendra Mauger, Angie Spann, and all the hospitality committee volunteers for providing such delicious meals and tasty treats for our teachers during the February conferences.

Carmen Bauer for putting together the displays every month on the PTA bulletin board, and for coordinating the donations to replenish classroom supplies.

CAMPBELL-DEANE SCHOLARSHIP

The Fairmount PTA offers a scholarship to former Fairmount students. These past students are eligible for a $1,000 scholarship when they are high school seniors. This scholarship is available to any high school senior who was enrolled at Fairmount Elementary School for a period of three years or more, has a satisfactory grade standing, citizenship record, and community service experiences.

To apply, print the Scholarship Requirements and return your application to Fairmount by April 6, 2018.

FAIRMOUNT TALENT SHOW 2018

This year’s talent show was a total success. Everyone did an amazing job. A total of 30 acts and 60 kids graced the stage. A surprise act from the 6th grade teachers along with 5th and 6th grade students kicked off the show. There were singers, dancers, rappers, instrumentalists, pogo stick jumpers, martial arts, and actors who graced the stage that night. Sixth graders Landon Orchard and Emilie Sinesi were phenomenal masters of ceremony, while a combination of 5th and 6th grade volunteers helped with backstage setup and music for the talent show. It was a packed house, and the audience was totally entertained. So many came to support these very talented kids, proving that this long-standing tradition should be continued for years to come. Fairmount Talent Show even made the Jeffco Schools Facebook page.

Sincere thanks to the following people for their help and encouragement in making this magical night possible: Ms. Mills, Mr. Dewinkle, Ms. Bobroske, Nikki Dodge, Lauren Gomes, Vionna Balderas-Soto, Christy Marquardt, Susie Wilson, Jess Nauslar, Mara Orchard, Kristen Schneck, the PTA Board, our amazing backstage crew (Drew Felderman, Emily Wilson, Jesus Balderas-Soto, Jack Dixon, Levi Stewart, Carson Pratt, Oskar Harvey), and DJs (Abbey Kos, Brody Sonnenfeld, James D). It was my pleasure to work with all of you.  —Mary Sinesi

NEWS FROM THE LMC
(Library Media Center)

Spelling Bee

CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of our
annual spelling bee!

Champion: Nula Burns (5, Tilton)
1st Runner-Up: Sophie Christiansen (5, Veldman)
2nd Runner-Up: Kayla Grenwis (5, Blomquist)

These students represented Fairmount at the area spelling bee at Drake Middle School on Tuesday, February 7. These super spellers handled some very difficult words and made Fairmount proud! Way to go!

Robotics Club

CONGRATULATIONS to all 27 Fairmount students who participated in the Robotics Competition on Saturday, February 10. This competition was the result of 14 weeks of work. Our teams worked hard to problem-solve and persevere, and their hard work paid off. Three of our teams made it to the finals, and they all tied for 3rd Place. One team, the Electrolites who are Oskar Harvey and Abby Fritzer, received the judges award for design and documentation. Many congratulations to all of our Robotics Club students!

Library Collaboration

  • Our kindergartners will be incorporating a tech component (Pixie, to write facts and draw pictures about the sun) into their Sun and Sky science unit.
  • Our 1st graders are incorporating pictures in PowerPoint and Google slideshows into their Leaders and Achievers Wax Museum project.
  • Veldman’s 5th graders and their Study Buddies, Mrs. McQuaid’s 2nd graders, are working together on a Sprinkler Project. This project came about after the sprinklers went off in our front office. Students had may questions, and these students plan to do the research to answer them!

Colorado Children's Book Award

All students at Fairmount have voted for their favorite Colorado Children’s Book Award (CCBA) picture book. Ten picture books and ten chapter books are nominated by students in Colorado each year. Your students have gotten to hear at least three of these picture books read to them, if not all. Grades K and 1 voted using Smart Response clickers, and grades 2–6 voted via a Google Form. The votes have been compiled and turned in to the state committee who sponsors this event, and they will inform me of the state winner. It has been fun to read all of these great books!

SAVING MILK CAPS = $ MOO-LA FOR FAIRMOUNT!

Thank you to those families who have contributed to the success of our partnership with Longmont Dairy for the “Milk Caps for Moo-la” program!

With your support, so far this school year we’ve collected 8,400 product caps, raising $420 for our school! Not only does Fairmount benefit by receiving 5 cents for every cap we collect, but we save many caps from going to a landfill by returning these to the dairy so they can be recycled.

How can you help if you aren’t already participating? Just start saving Longmont Dairy product caps if you already have products delivered to your home (or sign up with Longmont Dairy if you wish to be part of their delivery program at http://www.longmontdairy.com/sign-up.php). Collect caps from family, friends, and neighbors too! Clean caps should be placed in plastic bags with the student’s name, grade, and number of caps enclosed written on the outside of the bag. Place bags of caps in the “Milk Caps for Moo-la” collection box right inside the main entrance of our school.

Our Fairmount PTA sponsors the monthly prize drawing from students who have collected and contributed caps. To compete in the monthly drawing, students must place caps in the collection container by the last school day of each month. The monthly winner is then revealed the next week during the morning announcements.

This school year’s “Moo-la” monthly winner has received a $5 gift certificate to Dairy Queen:

August/September               Max Bianco, 3rd grade
October                                 Tehya Metzinger, 6th grade
November                             Jack Dixon, 5th grade
December/January               Tyler Alcock, 2nd grade

Be sure to have your caps in by March 23for the next drawing! Feel free to contact the Fairmount “Moo-La” parent volunteer Kim Wheeler, afwheels@earthlink.net, with any questions you may have.

THANK YOU to 1ST BANK of Arvada at Westwoods for their continued support of Fairmount!
