May Events & Celebrations

Wow! May is chock-full of special events! On May 17th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., we had the Student Art Show and Retirement Celebration. Every student had a piece of artwork displayed throughout the school, and our choir  showcased their talents at 5:30. We recognize our staff retirees, Mrs. Goad and Ms. Wagner, at 5:30. Mrs. Johnson is hosting a summer book fair from May 14th through the 18th. K–2nd grade Field Day was May 16th in the morning, and 3rd–6rd grade Field Day is all day on May 18th. Continuation for 5th and 6th graders is May 23rd, and the last day for K–4th grade students is May 24th, ending at 1:05. Whew! It will be busy! Please continue to check our Sunday messages, the school calendar on our website, and the marquee for reminders and details.

Summer Is Coming!

Everyone at Fairmount wishes to thank our fabulous families for a successful school year! It has been our passion and pleasure to work with you to help our students grow in so many ways! We hope everyone has a happy summer vacation! This is a great time for everyone to play, relax, and spend time with family and friends.

The school office will be open until June 13th and re-opening on July 19th for next school year. Summer office hours are from 9:00 to 3:00.

As always, if you have a question, comment, or suggestion, please call the office, stop by, or email me at smills@jeffco.k12.co.us.

Hufford & Co. Real Estate & Property Management  will make a donation to charity of client’s choice for every real estate transaction handled by us associated with Fairmount Elementary.

FAIRMOUNT FIREBIRD 5K CHASE

Mother Nature dished out some mighty fine weather for us at our 13th annual Fairmount Firebird 5K Chase & Fun Run on Sunday. With well over 400 5K, 1K, and 50-meter-dash racers, our event goes in the books as another huge success! We couldn’t put on such a wonderful event without our volunteers and fabulous new and returning sponsors. Thank you all for supporting the kids, teachers, and families that make up our Fairmount community.

For those of you who attended our event for the first time, we hope you enjoyed the morning’s festivities and will join us again next year! Don’t forget to check out race day photos on our event Facebook page or the link on the PTA web sitePlenty of great family memories and smiles were captured there!

Click HERE to access the link to download photos from the race!

We’re always looking for new faces and fresh ideas to keep this treasured event going for years to come, so if you’re interested in joining the Fairmount Firebird 5K Chase team, we’d love to have you!

DID YOU HAVE FUN AT THE FAIRMOUNT FIREBIRD 5K CHASE THIS YEAR?

Would you like to be a part of the planning process for next year’s race? We are looking for people to join the committee, someone to be a co-coordinator, and someone to be the sponsorship coordinator. Planning starts in the fall, so please let us know if you would like to be a part of planning our school's largest fundraiser!

Email enrichment@fairmountpta.org if you are interested.

PTA HAPPENINGS

It is hard to believe we have less than one month of school left. As this school year comes to an end, the PTA Board would like to thank EVERYONE who volunteered and supported the PTA throughout the year. We could not operate such a successful PTA without all of you. Because of all our generous parents and hardworking volunteers, we have raised enough money to fund the many PTA programs that support our children throughout the school year. Thank you so much to the Fairmount Community for helping make this happen!

Congratulations, Fairmount Firebird 5K Chase runners! What a wonderful day it was for a race. Great job, Fairmount Firebird 5K Chase committee! Because of all of you, we raised over $27,000!! Thank you to all the sponsors and volunteers. The Fairmount Community is a generous one, and we are all grateful for your continued support.

The PTA-sponsored Parent University was a fun and informative night. What an honor to have Dr. Jason Glass, Superintendent of Jeffco Schools, as our keynote speaker! He gave an amazing presentation about the future of Jeffco schools. The workshops were dynamic and engaging. We would like to thank each of our presenters for their informative sessions and we would like to express our huge appreciation to our Principal, Mrs. Sally Mills, and our Digital Teacher Librarian, Mrs. Andi Johnson, for making this night happen.

Safe Routes to Schools Community Open House Reminder: Earlier this year, our school was awarded a Federal Safe Routes to School Grant ($265k).  Many of us, past and present, have had a desire for our kids to walk or bike to Fairmount. This vision is in the works, but we need to have community support to make this happen. Please come to the Community Open House to learn more about what is planned between McIntyre and the school, and show your support. The county is looking for high attendance at this meeting to show strong community support. So bring your whole family and invite all your neighbors! The event will be held in the Fairmount Elementary gym on May 15th from 5:oo–7:00 p.m.

The Learning Garden Committee has been quite busy so far this year. The kindergarten classes have started seedlings indoors under lights, and the kids are so excited watching their little seeds grow! The after-school Garden Club has kicked off with a full roster of kids doing some fun activities in the garden. We made a hoop house and planted some winter greens and radish inside so they can be served in the cafeteria this May.

We would like to give huge thank you to all the families who came out to our Community Work Day in March to help replenish our beds with new soil. It was great to see so many new families engaged in the garden! Keep an eye out for a SignUp Genius to help care for the Learning Garden for one week this summer.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to fill out the PTA Survey. Here are the results as well as our plan of action.

During the April PTA meeting, the election for the 2018–2019 PTA Board was conducted. The PTA members elected Kristi Mladenovic as President, Jodi Williams as Vice President, Kristina Klug as Treasurer, and Alison Beck as Secretary. The PTA board then appointed Becky Asbury as VP of Finance, Jessica Nauslar as VP of Fundraising, Mara Orchard as VP of Classroom Support, and Laura Warren as VP of Enrichment. Each of these positions will take effect July 1, 2018.

The summer PTA Meeting will be held at Fairmount Park on Tuesday, August 14th, at 12:00 p.m. Bring the kids and a picnic. Hope to see you there!

—The Fairmount PTA Board

NEWS FROM THE LMC
(Library Media Center)

Paws for Books Spring Book Fair!

Thank you all for supporting our Spring Book Fair, which has taken place May 14–18. We hope this has put great books into the hands of our students for summer reading and helps to offset the “summer slide” when learning often takes a dip. This is a critical fundraiser for our library, so many thanks for your support!

Library Collaboration!

  • Robots! Some students have come to the library to program Sphero robots. They have made their robots roll in a square and a rectangle. Some students have mastered equilateral triangles, and some have worked on programming their robots to roll through a maze. It has been exciting to see their problem-solving programming skills grow!
  • Our 1st graders completed their class books about the sun. They used Google Slides to type three facts and insert three pictures about the sun. Stop by the library to check out their amazing work!
  • Our 2nd graders are creating or have created digital books using Google Slides called My Favorite Things. They can log in from home and show you their work!
    • Go to google.com.
    • Kids log in with the email of their student: ID#@jeffcoschools.us
    • Their password is their 8-digit birthday: mmddyyyy
  • Our 4th graders are creating digital scrapbooks of their school year using Google Docs. Families can upload pictures to their student’s classroom’s folder in Google Drive for students to copy and paste into their scrapbooks.

PARENT UNIVERSITY

Many thanks to those of you who attended our first-ever Parent University on Monday, April 30. Over 150 parents and close to 100 children attended.

The evening began with a pizza supper sponsored by our PTA. It was fun to share a meal and visit with other Fairmount families. Parents then enjoyed an informative keynote address by Dr. Jason Glass, Superintendent of Jeffco Schools, who discussed how teachers are transforming students’ learning by incorporating more authentic tasks to prepare them to be problem-solvers in the workplace. He also explained Funding/Facilities and the challenges facing Jeffco since the recession of 2007–2008, and he presented a couple options on how these can be overcome.

Parents then chose two from the following six presentations: 7 Keys to Comprehension (Leanna Leisenring), Internet Safety (George Mumma), STEM/Robotics (Angie Blomquist, Risa Wakefield, and students), Digital Wellness: Balancing Screen Time at Home (Mary Beth Bazzanella), Diversity & Equity through Children’s Literature (Jane Hampleman, Jennifer Amolsch, and Kathy Staller), and Protecting Your Child’s Mental Health (Sarah and Jeff Bontrager). The feedback from parents was amazing! Parents valued the information and only wished the sessions were longer. During the presentations, children were engaged in teacher-led activities throughout the building.

Below are a few pictures, but to access videos of the presentations as well as valuable resources, go to the Fairmount Elementary website, click Library, and then click Parent University at the top of the page. Many thanks to all of the teachers who gave their time to serve, present, and entertain the children, and to our PTA for sponsoring this valuable event.

SAVING MILK CAPS = $ MOO-LA FOR FAIRMOUNT!

Thank you to those families who have contributed to the success of our partnership with Longmont Dairy for the “Milk Caps for Moo-la” program!

With your support, so far this school year we’ve collected 13,100 product caps, raising $655 for our school! Not only does Fairmount benefit by receiving 5 cents for every cap we collect, but we save many caps from going to a landfill by returning these to the dairy so they can be recycled.

How can you help if you aren’t already participating? Just start saving Longmont Dairy product caps if you already have products delivered to your home (or sign up with Longmont Dairy if you wish to be part of their delivery program at http://www.longmontdairy.com/sign-up.php). Collect caps from family, friends, and neighbors too! Clean caps should be placed in plastic bags with the student’s name, grade, and number of caps enclosed written on the outside of the bag. Place bags of caps in the “Milk Caps for Moo-la” collection box right inside the main entrance of our school.

Our Fairmount PTA sponsors the monthly prize drawing from students who have collected and contributed caps. To compete in the monthly drawing, students must place caps in the collection container by the last school day of each month. The monthly winner is then revealed the next week during the morning announcements.

This school year’s “Moo-la” monthly winner has received a $5 gift certificate to Dairy Queen:

August/September               Max Bianco, 3rd grade
October                                 Tehya Metzinger, 6th grade
November                             Jack Dixon, 5th grade
December/January              Tyler Alcock, 2nd grade
February                               Aidan Howery, 6th grade
March                                    Liam Clark, Kindergarten
April                                      Jackson Rogers, 1st grade
May                       *caps due May 18, drawing on May 21

Feel free to contact the Fairmount “Moo-La” parent volunteer Kim Wheeler, afwheels@earthlink.net, with any questions you may have.

THANK YOU to 1ST BANK of Arvada at Westwoods for their continued support of Fairmount!
