SUBJECT: January News & Events

Message from Sally Mills, Principal

Student-Based Budgeting & Enroll Jeffco
January is the time of year that we set our budgets for the next school year.  Fairmount’s budget is based on an estimate of how many students we expect to be enrolled next school year.  This budget will be adjusted up or down next fall based on actual enrollment at the October count. We need to have the best possible estimates to plan for the ideal number of classrooms, teachers, and open-enrolled students!  We also would like to avoid an unexpected budget loss next fall if we overestimate.  Please pass the word to neighbors who have incoming kindergarteners – they might not know this is the time to register for next year!

How do families help with this budgeting process?  To help us determine the number of continuing students, all families need to let us know if their child will be returning to Fairmount. Please visit EnrollJeffco.org and let us know by January 28th!  You can access the site from the school website.  If you have any questions, need to use the school computers, or need assistance with the program, please call or come to the office between 7:30-4:00.

School Safety Information
If you are interested in learning more about Jeffco school safety protocols, please join us for the Accountability Committee meeting on Thursday, January 20th.  We will review our Standard Response Protocols, including suicide prevention and threat assessment.

If you have a question, comment, or suggestion, please call the office or email me at Sally.Mills@jeffco.k12.co.us.

A Note From Your President

Welcome back, Firebirds! We hope you had a nice and relaxing holiday break. We are back in full swing with lots of activities and events for the new year.

Please join us in our upcoming fundraising efforts with Books with the Birds. Last year we raised more than $30K which allowed the library to bring in almost 1000 new books on a wide variety of topics to appeal to our young readers' growing interests.

We also have our next PTA meeting on February 1 at 6:30 pm in the library. All are welcome to attend.

Help us Beat Westwoods Elementary!

Books with the Birds Read-A-Thon celebrates reading in addition to raising funds to support our library and PTA. This year, we'll compete against Westwoods Elementary for fundraising and reading efforts!

Top readers in each class/school will be awarded and top fundraisers in each class/school. Registration opens January 16 at BookswiththeBirds.com. The competition starts Friday, January 21, and ends Sunday, January 30th.

Kindergarten: Help Stock the Fridge!

This month, we welcome our Kindergarten families to sign up to bring in an item(s) to help stock the staff lounge. Items will be due on Tuesday, February 1st, and collected by the main doors from 8:40 am-9:00 am. Sign up here!

Thank you to our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th-grade families who already donated treats for our staff this year! We appreciate your generosity!

Spirit Wear Fridays

Don't forget to send your kids in their Fairmount spirit wear on Fridays! Classes with the most spirit will win fun prizes throughout the rest of the year.

School Supply Drive

Our little learners were quite busy last semester, and as a result, our school could use a little refresh in the school supply department! We've included grade levels and general needs for the school (STEM, speech, LMC, etc.). Keep in mind you can purchase for any teacher, not just your own child's teacher. Be sure to write the teacher's name on your bag or package of supplies.

Please bring items with the teacher/staff name who requested supplies by January 28 to the front office. Sign up here.

Yearbooks on Sale

Yearbook packages and individual items are now available online at Fairmountpta.org through Friday, April 1, 2022. Yearbooks are distributed at the end of the year and can be signed by classmates. Purchase now, as you must preorder for end-of-year distribution.

Tower Gardens in 5th Grade

The Learning Garden Committee is excited to now have a tower garden in all 5th-grade classrooms for the winter/spring semester! Students will be able to follow their plants from seed to harvest. A unique lineup of additional lessons is also coming this year. In addition, we have guest speakers from our community to help teach about water, light, nutrition, and much more! If you are interested in helping in your child’s class or have ideas about learning that goes with plants and these impressive towers, please get in touch with Cathie Rhodes at cathieclarkpa@gmail.com.

Fit Fun Club

It's time to get strong! Join the Fit Fun Club on Tuesday, January 18th at 7:40am in the gym for Strong Nation by Zumba, a high-energy strength and cardio circuit set to Kidz Bop music. Sign up here.

Spelling Bee
The Fairmount Spelling Bee for 4th and 5th graders will be held on Tuesday, January 25th, from 2:00 - 3:30. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accommodate a parent audience this year. However, it will be recorded and sent out to the parents of all participants.

Battle of the Books
Many of our 5th-grade students are preparing for our Battle of the Books competition on Wednesday, February 23rd. Battle of the Books is a trivia-based literacy program. Students read from a list of ten books from different genres and then compete against other teams to answer questions about the books. This friendly competition will allow teams to battle each other within our school, and then we will send our TOP TWO teams to a Final Battle between other teams around the Jeffco school district.

Digital Citizenship for January
Our students will engage in digital citizenship learning related to Media Balance & Well-Being during January. These lessons focus on agency, not addiction, quality time, not simply total screen time.

At home, you can support your child in understanding Media Balance & Well-Being by:
-Having regular communication about internet safety
-Setting up family rules
-Helping them identify emotions around device use
