SUBJECT: Welcome Back, Firebirds!

Message from Sally Mills, Principal

Welcome to 2022-2023!
Welcome to a great new school year! The staff has been working hard preparing classrooms and instruction for all our students. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new staff members: Ms. Heather Waldo – 5th Grade Teacher; Ms. Laura Hirn – Music Teacher; Ms. Erin Shea – Learning Specialist; and Ms.Aryn Jones – ESL Teacher.

New Reading Program
We are excited to offer our students a new literacy program – Into Reading by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH)! This program offers high-quality books that students will enjoy. The instruction includes foundational literacy skills (phonics, fluency, spelling, etc.), vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, and oral language skills. Look for family letters, which will be sent home by your child’s teacher at the start of each module. Be sure to attend Curriculum Night on August 31st for 1st through 3rd grades and September 1st for 4th and 5th grades to hear more about our reading program from your child’s teacher.

As always, if you have a question, comment, or suggestion, please call the office, stop by, or email me at smills@jeffco.k12.co.us.

A Note From Your President

Welcome to the new school year! We are glad to have your students back into the building and look forward to a fun year ahead. The PTA is actively looking for sponsors to help us fund our programs. If you are interested in sponsoring, you'll not only get great exposure in front of our Fairmount community, but you'll be helping us immensely!

On September 30th, we welcome you to join us for Firebirds on the Fairway, a golf outing to raise money for our Mimeo Boards. Even if you don't golf, join us for lunch and come be a part of the fun! We'll be hosting a Silent Auction with highly coveted offerings—including Teacher Dates, Lunch on the Roof with Mrs. Mills & Mrs. Kruse, a parking spot, and more. You don't have to participate in the golf outing to participate in the silent auction.

Last year we said goodbye to our Vice President, Laura Warren, who helped PTA for six years. While we'll miss Laura and her contributions, we want to introduce you to Brytanni Watson, now serving as VP. She can assist with committee inquiries and open positions.

We are here to support both parents and the Fairmount faculty. If we can help you, please feel free to reach out.

Note: If you haven't renewed or joined the PTA yet, do it soon so you can continue to receive information about activities and programs from the PTA all year long!

We Need Parent Volunteers!

"No one can do everything, but everyone can do something."
Take a look at our open positions and see if any interest you. Thank you to all of our 2022-2023 coordinators for volunteering your time and talents!

Open PTA Positions:

  • Room Parents
To help organize classroom parties for Halloween and Valentine's Day, and sometimes an end-of-yearparty. Visit the Sign-Up Genius for more information.
  • Secretary (Board Position):
To shadow the current secretary throughout the Fall semester and learn the position's duties to take over in the Spring. Duties include: Attend all meetings, take minutes, get minutes approved and post them to our website; update the website calendar with PTA events; and contribute to the monthly newsletter with PTA happenings, upcoming programs, and a note to volunteers.
  • Sponsorship Assistants (at home position):
We are looking for multiple people to connect with current sponsors and new businesses. We also need volunteers to help coordinate sponsors with events. This is an easy volunteer opportunity you can do from home!
  • Hospitality Coordinators:
Do you like to event plan? This is a fun and rewarding job! Grab a friend and plan menus, organize volunteers, and help us feed teachers in this hospitality coordinator role.
  • Summer Book Box Coordinator:
This coordinator will collect orders in the spring for Summer Bridge Books, Brain Quest Books, and Summer Book Boxes to help prevent the summer slide and work with the vendor to place the order.

Interested in volunteering? Contact Brytanni Watson at VP@Fairmountpta.org.

Discover the Learning Garden

Did you know the Fairmount Learning Garden is always open to the Fairmount community? The start of the school year is a great time to visit the garden. It is thriving as we near the end of our growing season. Students, families, teachers, and staff are always welcome to stop by to pick ripe fruits and vegetables, dig in the dirt, or just sit and enjoy the beauty of the space. Please stop by and take a look.

The Learning Garden Committee meets 3-4 times in the Fall and the Spring to complete projects in the Garden, discuss plans for improvements, and brainstorm outreach to the classrooms. The committee also cares for 5 Tower Gardens that are rotated in the classrooms throughout the school year. We are always looking for new members to help keep our garden growing. If you have any interest in being a part of this committee, contact Heather Greene at hdgreene@hotmail.com. No experience is necessary.

Finally, the Learning Garden Committee has plans for improvements in the Garden over the next year, and installing a larger brick seating area is first on our list. If you or someone you know has experience with this and can either help us complete this project ourselves or recommend a company we can hire, please let us know. We’d love to get this done before winter sets in!

Cafeteria Menu

Welcome, Fairmount Families! We’re looking forward to a new year with your kids. I wanted to follow up on the communication you have received from the District regarding meals this school year. Meals will no longer be free, breakfast will be $2, and lunch will be $3.25, with milk included in both meals. If only milk is purchased, it is $1. You can go to schoolcafe.com/JEFFCOSD to set up an account, deposit money with your credit card, set up recurring payments, view the menu, alert us of dietary restrictions, and let us know of any purchase restrictions. Ala cart is offered to each grade level, and the District follows the guidelines for the federal Smart Snacks for Schools Program. We can also take checks and cash if you prefer. You can complete an application for free/reduced meals on School Café as well. If you would like to see if you qualify, fill out the application right away.

If your student has dietary allergies or sensitivity you’ll need to contact our Food Service dietician to set up a plan. We can provide gluten-free meals.

Each student will need to input their student ID number on the pin pad to check them out. This is also their user ID number for their Chrome Book login. We will scan the younger students' ID cards to get them through quickly, for now. I have attached a copy of the pin pad. If you would please help them practice their student ID number, that would be a big help to us. With the supply chain issues, it is possible that menus will be changed on very short notice. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please call Leanne Alton, cafeteria manager, at 303-982-5393, or stop by and she'll be happy to help. View the pin pad here. View the menu here.
