SUBJECT: September News & Events

Message from Sally Mills, Principal

It’s been a wonderful start to our new school year! Thanks for joining us at Curriculum Night if you were able to attend. Anytime you have a question or a wondering, please email your child’s teacher. If your question pertains to the school, but not the classroom, be sure to contact Mrs. Kruse or me in the school office.

Thank You, PTA!
A huge THANK YOU to PTA and all of our families who support our PTA fundraisers! This year, the PTA fundraising will go towards next-generation classroom technology. This year, we will be completing our last phase of replacing outdated SmartBoards with MimioBoards in all of our classrooms. In addition, PTA provides financial support to all of our classrooms and programs at the start of the year. This allows teachers to purchase what they need for their students without having to pay out-of-pocket.

Facilities Improvements at Fairmount:
I wanted to keep everyone updated on our school improvements from the 2018 Bond and Capital Improvement Program. Over the summer, the following improvements were made:
-New playground equipment: The main playground equipment and swings were replaced on our big playground. Some of the existing pieces were re-installed to be up to code. The kids are loving it!
-Glass by doorways: The glass panes around all the doorways were replaced with a more durable material.
-Roof and skylight repair: Part of the roof and our skylights were replaced due to hail damage.

As always, if you have a question, comment, or suggestion, please call the office, stop by, or email me at Sally.Mills@jeffco.k12.co.us.

Library & Media Center Updates

One School, One Book
Thank you to everyone who participated in our One School, One Book program this summer. We had a great time reading about "Fenway and Hattie" and spending time reading with our families. Students participated in trivia questions with their classrooms and were entered into a “ruff”le to win special prizes from the library. There are more books in the Fenway series if your child wants to continue reading about this spirited dog!

Library Orientation
All students in Kindergarten-5th grade will come to the library for orientation during September. Students will learn about book care, how to put books on hold, self-checkout, and how to care for Chromebooks and iPads. We are so excited to see your children in the library checking out books. Books can be checked out and returned before and after school and during your child's library time. We can update our series books this year thanks to our wonderful Fairmount community and PTA!

Digital Citizenship in September: Digital Footprint and Identity
In September, Fairmount students will learn how their online activities leave behind their Digital Footprint, which cannot be fully erased. Our digital footprint, or online presence, has long-lasting implications, and children and young adults need to realize that digital footprints are often public and potentially accessible by anyone. This month, you can help your child(ren) learn how they can contribute to a positive digital reputation, both for themselves and for others. Tips for Families

Robotics Club
The Robotics Club will begin its 5th season this year, coordinated by Mrs. Veldman, Ms. Altice, and Mr. Heaviland. Students in grades 4 and 5 who have a passion for designing, building, collaborating with others, and troubleshooting can apply to be in the club.  We can take 24 students, and if we have more interest, we will have a lottery to determine members. Applications will be available in the library on Friday, Sept. 9th, and are due by September 15th. The club will meet on Tuesdays before school, from 7:45 am – 8:45 am beginning Sept. 27th. The club will compete with other Jeffco schools in VEX tournaments throughout the school year. We look forward to seeing what our imaginative students can accomplish!

Save the Date | Scholastic Book Fair
Our Fall Book Fair is right around the corner! It will begin on Thursday, October 13th, and wrap up at noon on Wednesday, October 19th. This is a great way for students to buy books they are interested in and pick up a holiday gift. Both the fall and spring Book Fairs are HUGE events that are integral to the funding of many important resources for all of our students. Here is an overview of what the all-important Book Fair proceeds help purchase:

  • Books to keep our library collection current and interesting!

  • Magazines

  • PebbleGo – Online database with nonfiction facts geared for student use

  • Spelling Bee

  • The Battle of the Books

  • Library supplies

What's Happening in STEM

Kindergarten – Kindergartners had their first introduction to STEM. After the inspirational read-aloud "Have Fun Molly Lou Melon" by Patty Lovell, students learned a little about what STEM class will look like this year!

1st Grade – First graders used imaginations to creatively color a dot and bring it to life using the Quiver app. They were also introduced to 3Doodlers, the 3D pens! Using a stencil or free-hand drawing, students showed creativity in design and resilience with troubleshooting. They will be using these Doodlers all year in engineering projects.

2nd Grade – Exploring biomimicry, second graders created their invention modeled after a plant found in nature. They were surprised to discover how many human inventions have mimicked plants and animals in nature. Creative brains worked during the design process as they brainstormed ideas, sketched their prototype, and finally built their product.

3rd Grade – Gears, wheels, axles, levers, and pulleys galore! Third graders are exploring simple machines. Students built and analyzed simple machines that make our everyday lives easier.

4th Grade – Fourth graders started a design challenge. Students are improving an existing product in their lives. After analyzing an existing product (positive, negative, and potential for improvement), students think of ways to enhance this product through their specification sheets. There is no shortage of innovative ideas! These engineers in training followed the design process by sketching, building, and testing their prototypes.

5th Grade – Fifth graders dabbled with drones. After a brief introduction, explanation, and safety quiz, these pilots in training completed driving challenges with a partner. Hovering, pitching, rolling, and yawing were being experimented with in the Drone Zone. Pilots were, quite literally, troubleshooting on the fly!

Check out the STEM website for more information and photos!
