Updates from STEM

Kindergartners are designing and engineering backscratchers. Students brainstormed, sketched and labeled a prototype, and finally built a functional backscratcher. Our littlest engineers were limited only by their own imaginations (and materials)!

First graders are making playgrounds a safer place to play with a redesign project! Their self-standing playground prototype had go through the testing phase and withstand a fan simulating a typical Colorado day in the foothills. Creativity was thriving as students celebrated successes and troubleshot issues.

Second graders tested the absorbency of four different materials. Using group and class data, they selected one materials that they will use in their flood barrier. Stay tuned to find out if their chosen material protects their dog houses.

Third graders are redesigning a component of a fairy tale. First students empathize with a character in the story and determine a solvable problem (either preventative or reactionary). For example, in Goldilocks and the Three Bears teams either constructed a working latch on the door preventing a break-in or constructed a better, stronger, more durable piece of furniture for Baby Bear that will hold both the weight of Baby Bear and a heavier potential intruder. Students had to ideate with their group, then sketch, build and test their prototype.

Fourth graders completed the “Pop Bottle Waves and Hairdryer Ripples” lesson. Day one consisted of different experiments, and day two involved analyzing those experiments from the amplitude of the wave to the height and depth of the crest and trough and finally the distance of the wavelengths.

Fifth graders just impressed judges, Fairmount students and staff, and community members with their Science Fair projects and presentations. Hypotheses were getting proven and disproven with individual experiments.
