SUBJECT: September News & Events

Message from Sally Mills, Principal

Health and Safety Regarding COVID-19

Now that school has gotten going, we wanted to review Jeffco’s Covid protocols and explain how Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) is managing positive test results. Jeffco changed how we respond to cases based on how last year went with the intent to minimize the spread of the virus so that kids can be in person at school as much as possible. Following are important points that all families need to know:

  • If anyone in your family has Covid symptoms and is being tested, your child must stay home until the results are known.
  • If anyone in your family has tested positive, your child must stay home. Please call the office to get information on when your child can return to school.
  • All families must health screen your child before they come to school each day. Please see the screener on our website under Family Resources or call the Health Room for details.
  • JCPH is managing school quarantines. All staff/students who test positive will quarantine. If staff/students are vaccinated or are wearing masks, they will not be considered a close contact with the person who tested positive or need to quarantine. The mask requirement does not apply outdoors or for minimal exposure defined as less than 15 minutes. Therefore, students can eat their quick snacks in the classroom and eat lunch outside without being considered a close contact if a classmate tests positive. The only exposure at school where students may be considered a close contact and need to quarantine is when we eat lunch in the cafeteria if they are sitting near a classmate who tests positive.
  • If your student has a positive Covid test, please contact the office right away. This information is provided to JCPH along with close contacts. Again close contacts would be classmates sitting next to that student in the cafeteria 48 hours prior to that student developing symptoms. We have seating charts in the cafeteria so we know who those students are. We are also eating picnic lunches outside as much as possible to minimize exposure and quarantines.
  • If someone in your child’s class tests positive, you will get an email from school letting you know. (This doesn’t mean your child was a close contact.) If your child is a close contact, JCPH will review the information and email you a letter explaining when your student can return to school. Please send your child to school unless you hear from JCPH.

Please note as our community navigates this delta variant, protocols may change if the conditions worsen. Our mission is always to keep our students and staff safe while maximizing learning. Thanks for your help following these guidelines to keep our students in school while we minimize illness, community spread, and potential school closures. If you have any questions regarding this topic, feel free to contact our registered nurse at Gina.Scheidt@jeffco.k12.co.us.

As always, if you have a question, comment, or suggestion, please call the office, stop by, or email me at smills@jeffco.k12.co.us.

Based on feedback, this event is here to stay! We'll look at ways to improve the wait times and expand our food truck offerings. If you have any suggestions, please email us. Also, please join me in thanking Deb Brannon for her hard work in planning the fantastic event!

In an effort to provide our families more resources and create a stronger community, we will be hosting guest speakers before our PTA meetings when able. Please consider joining us on September 7! More info here.

Lastly, we want to personally invite you to our next event, Firebirds on the Fairway, at Applewood Golf Course, on September 24th. Even if you don't play golf, we'd love to have you come out and support the event!

4th Grade: Let's Stock the Fridge!

During the 2021-2022 school year, we will be stocking the staff lounge with treats and drinks for our treasured Fairmount faculty. Each month families of a designated grade level will be invited to participate. This month, we welcome our 4th-grade families to sign up to bring in an item(s) to help stock the lounge. Items will be due on the 1st of October and collected by the main doors from 8:40 am-9:00 am. Sign up here!

Thank you to our 5th-grade families who already donated treats for our staff for the month of September! We appreciate your generosity!

Note: this is a new program. We welcome any feedback, questions, or suggestions.

Learning Garden Help Wanted

Fairmount's Learning Garden Committee is looking for volunteers. The committee meets 4-5x/year to coordinate planting, care, and maintenance. No experience is necessary, though passion and expertise are always appreciated. Volunteer opportunities include: assisting teachers in utilizing the outdoor garden and indoor Tower Gardens, starting and planting seeds with students in spring, harvesting the garden in summer/fall, and running a student garden club. If interested, sign-up on the PTA website. For more information, please contact Heather Greene.

The Learning Garden Committee is also working with several classrooms on indoor Tower Gardens! Look for these fun additions to Mrs. Artleth's, Mrs. Zarhte's, Mrs. Nick's, and Mrs. Trebilcock's classes this fall! The 5th graders will get to experience the science that goes with growing in the spring semester. If you're interested in helping with the Tower Gardens, please get in touch with Cathie Rhoades.

New Year, New Track!

The PTA would like to thank JC & Ashley Kelley, Jim Bohks, JAB Logistics, and Kelley Trucking for donating their time, talent, and equipment this summer to repair the school's track. We are thrilled with the outcome and know our Fairmount Firebirds will enjoy the track for many years to come! Thank you!

Spirit Wear Coming Soon!

Designs are being finalized and spirit wear will be available soon! Remember we only sell spirit wear once a year, so don't miss out!

Every Friday at Fairmount is School Spirit Day and this year we'll be tracking classrooms for participation. Each semester we'll reward the class with the most participants with a pizza party!

Library & Media Center Updates

Library Orientation
All students in Kindergarten-5th grade will come to the library for orientation during September. Students will be learning about book care, how to put books on hold, self-checkout, and how to care for Chromebooks and iPads. We are so excited to have the library open again for students this year. Books can be checked out and returned before and after school and during your child's scheduled library time. Thanks to our wonderful Fairmount community and PTA, students also have 1000 new books to choose from this year!

Digital Citizenship in September: Digital Footprint and Identity
In September, Fairmount students will learn how their online activities leave behind their Digital Footprint, one that cannot be fully erased. Our digital footprint, or online presence, has long-lasting implications. Children and young adults need to realize that digital footprints are often public and potentially accessible by anyone. This month, you can help your child(ren) learn how to contribute to a positive digital reputation, both for themselves and for others. Tips for Families

Robotics Club
The Fairmount Robotics Club will begin its 4th season, coordinated by Mrs. Veldman and Mr. Robinet. Students in grades 4 and 5 who have a passion for designing, building, collaborating with others, and troubleshooting can apply to the club. We can take 24 students, and if we have more interest than that, we will have a lottery to determine members. Applications will be available in the library on Tuesday, Sept. 7th, and are due by September 13th. The club will meet on Tuesdays from 3:45 – 4:45 beginning Sept. 28th. In addition, the club will compete with other Jeffco schools in VEX tournaments. We look forward to seeing what our imaginative students can create!

What's Happening in STEM

Kindergarten – Kindergartners had their first introduction to STEM with a focus on E for engineering. After the inspirational read-aloud, Have Fun Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell, students used their own imaginations to build something with Strawbees.

1st Grade – First graders were introduced to 3Doodlers, the 3D pens! Using a stencil or free hand drawing, students showed creativity in design and resilience with troubleshooting. First graders studying waves in Science class made a string phone and tested different variables that made it possible to hear their partner. Don’t be surprised if they recreate this at home and discover how long the string can be until the phone doesn’t work!

2nd Grade – Exploring biomimicry, second graders created their own invention modeled after a plant found in nature. They were surprised to discover how many human inventions have mimicked plants and animals in nature. Creative brains were at work during the design process as they brainstormed ideas, sketched their prototype, and finally built their product.

3rd Grade – Gears, wheels, and axles, levers, and pulleys galore! Third graders are exploring simple machines. Merry-Go-Rounds, Catapults, and Go-Carts were built, analyzed, tested, and compared to different models. Student experts shared their knowledge with their peers.

4th Grade – Fourth graders started a design challenge. Students are improving an existing product in their lives. After analyzing an existing product (positive, negative, and potential for improvement), students think of ways to enhance it through their specification sheets. There is no shortage of innovative ideas!

5th Grade – Fifth graders dabbled with drones. After a brief introduction, explanation, and safety quiz, these pilots in training completed driving challenges with a partner. Hovering, pitching, rolling, and yawing were being experimented with in the Drone Zone. Pilots were, quite literally, troubleshooting on the fly!

Check out the STEM website for more information and photos!
