SUBJECT: Fairmount Firebird PTA Newsletter - October 2023

In this month's Fairmount Focus newsletter...

For all of you who take one look at this newsletter and immediately say "TL:DR" (as the kids say), this month's newsletter contains:

  • A Harvest Fest Parade and Halloween message from Mrs. Mills
  • October Mindset Masters
  • PTA president recap of the Firebirds on the Fairway and silent auction
  • Information on how you can sign up for book cart
  • Registration for fall/winter enrichment (and a request for a new enrichment coordinator)
  • Monthly updates on Fit Fun Club, ink recycling, and our school fundraisers
  • Updates about the library, book fairs, and Robotics Club
  • October lunch menu
  • And more!

If you are receiving these newsletters, you have joined/renewed your membership in our PTA for this school year. For that, we thank you! We ask that you please encourage your friends, your kid's friends parents, and that random mom or dad you are chatting with at pick-up to support the PTA and become a member. Forward them this link or have them go to fairmountpta.org to sign up.

Message from Sally Mills, Principal

Class of 2036!

Our kindergarteners are the Class of 2036! We participated in the Arvada Harvest Parade with the other Arvada West elementary schools and Willie the Wildcat (Arvada West High School Mascot). It was a beautiful day, and our kiddos made it the whole route! They had a wonderful time passing out candy to the spectators, and perhaps keeping a piece or two for themselves! Thanks to all the parents who joined us.

Halloween at School

We enjoy Halloween at Fairmount!  Kids can come to school in costume, and we will have a school parade and class parties on Tuesday, 10/31, in the morning from 8:00-9:20.  Please have students bring regular clothes to change into when the parties are over.  Kids can wear masks once they are in the classroom, but please no gore, fake blood, weapons, or make-up/hair dye that would be a distraction for the rest of the school day.  If you are sending in treats for our Halloween parties, absolutely NO TREE NUTS OR PEANUTS!  Drinks must be clear liquids or in pouches/boxes.

If parents would like to watch the parade, you will sign in at the office and then you can go to the cafeteria or the gym. Please note that you MUST stay in those spots until the parade is concluded. We don’t want parents walking to classes during the parade.  Thank you for making this day special for our students while also helping us to get back to the school day afterwards!

As always, if you have a question, comment, or suggestion, please call the office, stop by, or email me at Sally.Mills@jeffco.k12.co.us.

From the PTA President

Thank you to all of our families for your support and participation at the golf tournament and the silent auction. We are grateful for your generosity and willingness to help us provide our kids with the best educational experience possible. Because of that generosity, we were able to raise $21k for our kids - exceeding our goal for the event!

We urgently need parent volunteers to help us with the K-2 Book Cart Program. If you have free time during the week, please consider volunteering one day a week for 30 minutes to and hour, to help us get books home to our younger students to encourage literacy. See below for more information and contact BookCart@FairmountPTA.org to volunteer. Thank you!

Lauren Snow, PTA President

Book Cart

Our PTA Book Cart Program kicks off the first week of October. The program provides daily leveled books for each student in Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade to take home and practice their reading skills. Parent volunteers sign up to come in during one school day each week and swap out books for one or more classes.  Volunteers are still needed and it's not too late to join the team! Please see the signup genius link below for more information and to see available classes and times. Email bookcart@fairmountpta.org with questions.

Sign up to volunteer here.

After School Enrichment

The new fall/winter sessions for enrichments after school will open for enrollment in the next couple of weeks! Look out for a school-wide email when enrollment opens or you can always check HERE for any updates.

This school year marks our enrichment coordinator's final year at Fairmount. If you would like to see the enrichment program continue, please consider taking over this position. Getting a new coordinator on board this school year will provide time to walk through the process and be prepared for next year. The process is streamlined, so it should be way less time and energy to take on for future years as well as very rewarding and fun!

If you are interested in learning more, please contact Victoria Robinson at enrichment@fairmountpta.org

Fit Fun Club

October's Fit Fun Club activity is Karate, brought to you by Surge Kickboxing. Students will follow Sensei Mike, a 3rd-degree black belt, as they learn the basics of Shotokan Karate while gaining valuable life skills like self-respect, confidence, and focus.

Fit Fun Club will meet in the gym on Wednesday, October 11th.

Sign up here, as there is limited space left. (Please do not fill out the form again if you already filled it out for the year.)

Surge Kickboxing has also provided the following special offers:

News from the Library

Library Orientation

All students in Kindergarten-5th grade came to the library for orientation last month. Students learned about book care, searching for books in our library catalog, how to put books on hold, and how to care for Chromebooks and iPads. We are so excited to see your children in the library checking out books. Books can be checked out and returned before and after school and during your child's scheduled library time. We were able to update our library collection with about 150 new books this year thanks to our wonderful Fairmount community and PTA!

Wild West Book Fair - Saddle Up and Read

The Scholastic Book Fair is back! This is a great way for students to buy books they are interested in as well as pick up a holiday gift or two!

Tuesday, Oct.17th – 7:30 am - 7:00 pm

Robotics Club

The Fairmount Robotics Club is beginning its 6th season this year, coordinated by Mrs. Veldman and Ms Altice. Students in grades 4 and 5 who have a passion for designing, building, collaborating with others, and trouble-shooting are meeting on Tuesday afternoons and are off to a great start. The club will compete with other JeffCo schools in VEX tournaments throughout the school year. We look forward to seeing what our imaginative students can accomplish!
